A Litany on our 20th Anniversary

For our 20th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service Fiona Limpach (with the assistance of Richard Carson) composed a litany which reflects our work over the years. It is inspired by and uses part of the Jesus for President Litany of Resistance by Shane Claiborne, Jim Loney and Brian Walsh.

God the Father, Creator of heaven and earth

Have mercy upon us

God the Son, Redeemer of the World,

Have mercy upon us

God the Holy Spirit, our Counsellor and Sanctifier

Have mercy upon us

Deliver us

Deliver us, O God,

From our fear of death

Teach us hope in new creation

From the curse of control

Deliver us,

From the seduction of silence

Deliver us,

From the pleasure of power

Deliver us,

From self-satisfaction in judgement

Deliver us,

From enchantment with impurity

Deliver us,

From the noise of negativity

Deliver us,

From the paralysis of cynicism

Deliver us,

From the weight of want

Deliver us,

From the gravity of greed

Deliver us,

From our desire to be discontent

Deliver us

From having all the answers

Deliver us,

From a lack of imagination

Deliver us,

From a lack of thanks

Deliver us, O God

In the midst of our shortcomings

Lord, Let your Glory fall

Let us not be steered by the ways of this world

Be our Guiding Light.

Holy God, maker of Heaven and Earth,

Forgive us for we know not what we do

For the denial of your divine imprint on each person.

Forgive us, O Lord,

For dismissing dignity

Forgive us

For discouraging our brother

Forgive us

For disgracing our sister

Forgive us

For sowing the seeds of stigma

Forgive us

For making our agendas more important than the person

Forgive us

For reducing serving others to saving souls

O Lord, Forgive us all.

Forgive us for not wanting to listen to the stories of suffering

Help us to hear the cries of your people

Forgive us for refusing to embrace those at the margins of society

Help us to bring your healing touch

Forgive us for blinding ourselves to the injustice and inequality in our cities

Help us to use our eyes to see where change is needed

Forgive us for recoiling from the stench of death

Help us to smell the fragrance of life

Forgive us for not drinking from the same cup as those who are broken

Help us to taste your goodness

Search our hearts, O God,

Test us and know our thoughts

See if there are any wicked ways within us

Search our hearts, O God,

and lead us in the way everlasting

Into our doubt

Come Lord Jesus

Into our fear

Come Lord Jesus

Into our vulnerability

Come Lord Jesus

Into our insecurity

Come Lord Jesus

Into our grief,

disappointment,

anger.

Come, Lord Jesus.

Transform us to who You want us to be

To dispelling the myth of respectable sins

We commit

To crushing the voice of doubt and proclaiming the voice of hope

We commit

To sowing seeds of love not stigma

We commit

To indiscriminate acts of kindness

We commit

To hold ourselves to a standard of grace

We commit

To letting our hearts break for what breaks Yours

We commit

To speaking the truth in love

We commit

To seeing peace and righteousness kiss

We commit

To the One who became completely vulnerable in birth

We commit

To the refugee of Nazareth

We commit

To the One who rules with a towel rather than an iron fist

We commit

To the One who died on behalf of those that were killing Him

We commit

To the Resurrection and the Life

We commit

And all God’s people say:

AMEN
